ATTENTION GRAYS HARBOR COUNTY RESIDENTS

NOTICE OF VACANCY 

The Grays Harbor County Board of Health (“Board”) is seeking interested and qualified individuals for appointment to the Board.

What does the Board of Health do?

The Board:

1.       supervises all matters pertaining to the preservation of life and health of the people within Grays Harbor County;

2.      enforces the public health statutes of the state and rules promulgated by the state board of health and the secretary of health;

3.      supervises the maintenance of all health and sanitary measures for the protection of the public health within Grays Harbor County;

4.      enacts such local rules and regulations as are necessary in order to preserve, promote and improve public health and provide for the enforcement thereof;

5.      provides for the control and prevention of any dangerous, contagious or infectious disease within Grays Harbor County;

6.      provides for the prevention, control and abatement of nuisances detrimental to public health;

7.      makes such reports to the state board of health through the local health officer or the administrative officer as the state board of health may require; and

8.       establishes fee schedules for issuing or renewing licenses or permits or for such other services as are authorized by the law and the rules of the state board of health.

Who is eligible to apply?

The Board, which currently consists of the three Grays Harbor County Commissioners and  four (4) non-elected voting members is seeking to appointe one (1) community stakeholder member.

“Other community stakeholders” means the category of persons representing the following types of organizations located in the county or health district: (a) community-based organizations or nonprofits that work with populations experiencing health inequities in the county; (b) active, reserve, or retired armed services members; (c) the business community; or (d) the environmental public health regulated community.

What is the application and interview process?

Applications are due no later than August 21, 2026, at 4:30pm time PST.

Each applicant must designate the specific category or categories they are applying for in their application materials. The Board may consider applicants for any position for which they are qualified. Each applicant must disclose any potential conflict of interest.

The Board will interview all applicants in a panel format. The Board will ask each applicant a standard set of questions. Where necessary to understand an applicant’s response to a standard question, the Board may ask follow-up questions. In the event of a substantial number of applicants, the Board may elect to interview a smaller number of applicants as long as the applicants interviewed include a diversity of expertise and lived experience.

Upon completion of its recruitment and selection, the Board will refer the selection to the clerk of the Grays Harbor County Board of Commissioners for consideration of appointment. Each term of appointment is three (3) years.

At an open public meeting on or prior to October 15, 2026, the Grays Harbor County Board of Commissioners will approve and appoint the new Board of Health member by a majority vote. What factors will the Board consider?

When considering applicants for selection to the Board, the Board will consider:

(a)   service, current or past, on other local boards or commissions;

(b)   whether the applicant's background meets the qualifications of the applicant's selected category or categories;

(c)   potential conflict of interest;

(d)   the applicant's demonstrated commitment to public health;

(e)   whether the applicant represents a diversity of expertise and lived experience; and

(f)    whether the applicant represents the geographic diversity of the community.

The Board will also assess whether the applicant identifies with a historically underrepresented community when being considered as a nonelected member representing consumers of public health.

Notice of Plan Development

The Grays Harbor Homeless Housing Task Force and Public Health Staff are updating and further developing the Local Homeless Housing Plan for Grays Harbor County. The Washington State Department of Commerce mandates that local jurisdictions periodically submit a five-year local homeless housing plan for their respective jurisdictional areas. Guidelines outlining requirements and objectives for local jurisdictions are provided by Commerce, with consultative guidance from Homebase.

The Grays Harbor Homeless Housing Task Force comprises representatives including individuals with lived experience, residents of various cities, service providers closely engaged with the housing community, healthcare providers, youth and veteran advocates, the faith community, public health officials, and tribal representatives.

The plan's development will proceed throughout 2025, with finalization and adoption scheduled by the end of 2025.
